To add tax, multiply by (1 + rate): 100 + 20% VAT = 120. To remove tax from a price that already includes it, divide by (1 + rate): 100 including 20% VAT is 83.33 before tax, with 16.67 of tax — not 20, a common mistake.

How to use the VAT & Sales Tax Calculator

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Enter your VAT, GST or sales tax rate.
  3. Read the result for adding tax, or for removing tax if the amount already includes it.

Adding vs removing tax

Amount 100, rate 20%FormulaResult
Add tax100 × 1.20120.00 (tax 20.00)
Remove tax100 ÷ 1.2083.33 (tax 16.67)

Subtracting 20% from a price that includes 20% tax gives the wrong answer (80), because the tax was calculated on the smaller, pre-tax price.

Frequently asked questions

Which currency does it use?

Any. Enter amounts in your own currency — the maths is the same everywhere.

What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?

VAT and GST are charged at each stage of sale and are usually included in shop prices; US sales tax is added at the till. The maths for adding or removing them is the same.

How do I find the price before VAT?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.20.
