How to use the UK Passport Photo Maker

  1. Take a photo against a plain cream or light grey wall.
  2. Drag and zoom so the top of the head touches the top line and the chin is in the green zone.
  3. Download the digital photo for an online application, or the print sheet with eight 35×45 mm photos.

A printed UK passport photo must be 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, with the head 29–34 mm from chin to crown, on a plain cream or light grey background, taken within the last month. Digital photos for online applications must be at least 600 × 750 pixels and 50 KB – 10 MB.

Online or paper application?

Applying online (the usual way), you upload a digital photo — use the 700×900 px download. For a paper form you need two identical printed photos — print the 4×6 in sheet and cut out two. Printed photos must not be cut down from a larger photo, so print the sheet at 100% scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photo is cropped and saved inside your browser and never leaves your device.

Can the background be white?

GOV.UK asks for a plain cream or light grey background for printed photos and a plain light-coloured background for digital photos. A light grey or cream wall is the safest choice.

How recent does the photo need to be?

It must have been taken in the last month.

How do I print the photo sheet?

Print the 4×6 in sheet at any photo printing service or on a home photo printer using 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo paper. Choose “actual size” or 100% — never “fit to page” — then cut along the grey lines.
